The transfer of technology from universities to industry and the commercialization of academic research are central to the Univalor mission. We create ties between industry and research laboratories within Université de Montréal establishments so that innovations from research achieve their full value in business and society.

About us

Univalor is a university technology transfer organization. Since it was founded in 2001, it has strived to optimize research outcomes by commercializing the technological innovations of some 2600 researchers and professors from the Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal, as well as affiliated health centres. These researchers are active in the following fields:

By creating linkages between the university and the business community, Univalor helps make businesses more competitive, generate revenue for research and, most importantly, to enrich society.

Tech transfer outcomes

Technology transfer of university research generates economic and social benefits for researchers, establishments represented by Univalor, and industry partners.

The cumulative economic outcomes as of June 30, 2014:
  • $ 196 million in third-party investments in our spin-off companies
  • $ 13 million infunding from Gouvernment of Quebec to member establishments
  • $ 43 million in funding from Government of Canada to member institutions
  • $ 35 million in R&D agreements with our member institutions
  • $ 23 million in transaction revenues

Jacques Simoneau, Ph.D.
President and CEO

  • Jacques Simoneau, Eng., is president and CEO of Univalor. He founded and built the Société Innovatech du sud du Québec as its president and CEO, managing operations, developing the business plan, introducing governance practices and handling public relations. He worked for the Fonds de solidarité FTQ, managing investments in biotechnology, information technology and telecommunications, and then went on to join Hydro-Québec CapiTech Inc. and the Business Development Bank of Canada.

Grazia Maion
Business Development

  • In February 2012, Grazia Maion joined the Univalor team as life sciences business development manager. Grazia is the co-founder of Biomilestones, a company that specializes in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, and Univalor is the beneficiary of her dedication and experience in sales, clinical research and technology transfer in academic settings. During the past 20 years, she has developed an interest and expertise in strategic planning and business development, having worked as a senior investing advisor for Fonds de Solidarité FTQ. In addition to her personal and professional skills, Grazia holds a doctorate in microbiology-immunology from Université de Laval and an MBA from UQAM.

Anne-Marie Alarco, Ph.D.
Project manager, Life Sciences

  • Anne-Marie obtained a doctorate in molecular biology of the University of Montreal. She made her post-doctoral studies concerning the innate immune response to Candida albicans to the Institut de recherche en biotechnologie de Montréal. She then worked for Ecopia Biosciences, a biotechnology company developing therapies in the domains of the cancer and the infectious diseases. She also worked for Génome Québec. Before joining Univalor, Anne-Marie occupied scientific director's post within the network CellCAN, the excellent center working in cellular therapy and regenerative medicine.

Chloé Archambault
Project Manager, Science & Engineering

  • Chloé holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Polytechnique Montreal (2011) which introduced her to optics, materials science, electronics and electromagnetism. Through a master’s again in the Engineering Physics department, she gained more experience in nanotechnologies. Chloé is a junior member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec. She joined Univalor in 2014. As a project leader, her role is to participate in the technical and commercial evaluation of the technologies in portfolio at Univalor.

Clermont Beaulieu, Ph.D., MBA
Senior Director, Life Sciences

  • After studies in life sciences, specializing in neuroscience, at renowned universities, including Oxford, Clermont started his career at Université de Montréal as a researcher in the pathology and cellular biology department. He then became vice-president of research and development for a large private company, while managing a biotechnology spin-off company. His experience in the private sector gives him an insider’s perspective of every facet of transferring the scientific results of laboratory research. Over the years, Clermont has done business with companies in different economic sectors, including food, nutraceuticals, cosmetics and biopharmaceuticals. After more than a dozen years in the industry, Clermont joined Univalor in 2009 to do everything possible to see that technologies developed by researchers at Université de Montréal and affiliated establishments benefit businesses and society.

Lydiane Gaborieau, Ph.D.

  • While completing her PhD in Biology at McGill University, Lydiane was greatly involved within the university. Whether it was organizing multiple social and academic events for the student association or as the student representative for the association of the graduates students in biology. Through her experience as an entrepreneur, Lydiane has become well aware of the importance of intellectual property. She is passionate about new technologies and entrepreneurship in the Life Science sector and she is sensitive to the challenges that the new generation currently faces.

Morgan Guitton, Jr. Eng.
Director, Science & Engineering


  • As a project manager, Morgan evaluates and analyzes innovations in the Univalor portfolio and proposes them for collaboration and commercialization to potential industry partners. Before joining Univalor, Morgan worked in France as an embedded software engineer for cell phone systems. Upon arriving in Québec, she diversified her skills, notably in test automation and IT development.


Kassandra Martel
Communications and Social Media Officer

  • Kassandra joined the team at the beginning of year 2016. As the communications and social media officer, she supports the team of Univalors. Kassandra detains a diploma in communication, redaction and multimedia of the University of Sherbrooke.


Thierry Pagé
Senior Director, Science & Engineering
  • Thierry is an experienced manager with a history of success in commercialization of technologies, business scall-up, start-ups and business development. He created several strategies of marketing which led to millions of recurring revenue. He is fascinated by the link between innovation and business. He, among others, founded and led Odotech inc. during 18 years, one of the first spinoff of Polytechnique Montréal with operations in 22 countries. Thierry hold a diploma of Polytechnique Montréal in chemical engineering with graduated studies at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and at the MIT SLOAN. Since 2016, he has been a senior director in Sciences and Engineering at Univalor.

Jean-Claude Sabourin
Business Strategy Analyst

  • Jean-Claude Sabourin joined the business development team in March 2012. An expert at gathering and analyzing information, particularly in the field of health care, Jean-Claude gained extensive experience at major pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca R&D Montréal Inc., Labopharm and Shire Biochem Inc. (Biochem Pharma). He holds a certificate in information and journalism (Université de Montréal), a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry (Université de Sherbrooke) and a master’s degree in information science (Université de Montréal). At Univalor, his role is to assist and advise life sciences and science and engineering managers as to the commercial potential and positioning of technologies, their success, limitations and risks. He is also responsible for identifying opportunities and potential business relationships with companies and partners that will be profitable in the long term.

  • Audrey holds an engineering degree in chemical processes of the national School of the chemical industries (France), as well as a Master's degree in chemical engineering, option environment, of Polytechnique Montréal. She specializes in the industrial chemical processes, the green technologies and the environmental analysis of impact.

Anne-Marie Guertin, CA, CPA
Vice-Presidente, Finance and Administration

  • Prior to joining Gestion Univalor, Anne Marie Guertin held several leadership positions of increasing authority at Lantheus MI Canada, such as General Manager Canada Puerto Rico and Australia, as well as several financial leadership positions at Lantheus, Ecopia Biosciences and KPMG.  She has a proven track record of managing international operations, financial reporting as well as mergers and acquisitions. Throughout her career, Anne Marie has demonstrated a strong ability to solve complex business issues, to translate the numbers into a business story and has successfully built effective teams. Anne Marie has a Bachelor of accounting sciences from l’UQAM and holds the CPA, CA designation.


Johanne Dépatie, CPA, CGA
Auditor - Chief Accountant

  • Graduate of HEC with a bachelor’s degree in business administration – accounting as well as a graduate degree in public accounting. She also holds the titles of CPA, CGA. Prior to her arrival at Univalor, Johanne was Director of Finance at Sogemec Insurance and also previously worked at the renowned accounting firm KPMG. Through her extensive professional experience, she has developed a solid experience in the areas of accounting, audit, finance, budgeting and human resources. Johanne has strong analytical skills, the keen ability to summarize complex notions and information while always keeping in mind that what really counts is the success of the company. She is recognized for her global vision of business.

Marie-Josée Lapointe
Director, Legal and Corporate Affairs

  • Law graduate of the University of Montreal and a member of the Quebec Bar, Marie-Josée is a specialist of the questions touching the intellectual property. Before joining Univalor, she occupied during more than 10 years the post of lawyer and agent of trademarks within the business law firm BCF. She is also a junior lecturer in the Faculty of law of the University of Montreal where she gives a course of master's degree in valuation of the intellectual property. Marie-Josée also published several articles and gave numerous conferences onto diverse subjects touching the intellectual property.

  • Law graduate of the University of Montreal and a member of the Quebec Bar, Karine Jarry joined the Univalor team in 2014 as a contracts and intellectual property database manager. Ms Jarry has many years of experience in business and information technology.

Promoting technology transfer of discoveries made by university labs requires an ongoing close relationship with the academic world. Our liaison officers work within member establishments to inform researchers about possible avenues for commercializing their research and identify innovations with commercial potential, often at the conceptual stage.

Univalor’s board of directors is made up of representatives of industry and the academic world. The board ensures that Univalor is managed soundly and provides direct ties with the worlds of academia, science and business. Three committees report to the board of directors: the audit committee, the investment advisory committee and the human resources and governance committee.

  • Jacques Simoneau, Eng., is president and CEO of Univalor. Normand Brais
  • Normand Brais holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a doctorate in nuclear engineering, specializing in combustion/CFD, from the École Polytechnique de Montréal. In 1991, he founded his consulting firm Brais, Malouin and Associates (BMA), which specializes in combustion and industrial heating, and he remains its president. He is also the founding president of Sanuvox Technologies Inc. Normand Brais is a member of the board of directors, and the treasurer, of the Fondation des diplômés de l’École Polytechnique Montréal; he also serves on that foundation’s development committee. He is a member of the executive and treasurer of the United Nations Association in Canada.

Patrick Tremblay
  • Patrick is a biopharmaceutical and investment executive with broad expertise in R&D and business development.  He joined the team of Caprion Proteome in 2011 as Senior Vice-President, Corporate Development and Diagnostics.  He is leading the corporate strategies and the development of innovative diagnostics based on proteomic discoveries made at Caprion for indications such as cancer, infection and metabolic diseases.

    Prior to joining Caprion, Patrick has worked with Pappas Ventures, a US-based venture capital firm that guided the development of more than 50 life science companies in therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices and personalized medicine.  He held positions as Vice-President of R&D at BioAxone and as Director of Pharmacology at Neurochem where he developed neuroprotective and neuroregenerative drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and spinal cord injury.  He was also Assistant Professor in Neurology at the University of California in San Francisco where he worked on neurodegenerative diseases induced by prions and was part of the Nobel Laureate Team of Stanley Prusiner, Medicine and Physiology (1997).   

    Patrick has been involved in many innovative life science initiatives.  He is one of the cofounders of the Personalized Medicine Partnership for Cancer and was intimately involved in the creation and financing of the new Neomed Institute.  In recent years, he has held numerous advisory positions with diverse organizations such as the Campus des Technologies de la Santé, Quebec Consortium for Drug Discovery, Center of Excellence for Commercialization and Research of the Montreal Neurological Institute and at Pharmacology Institute of Sherbrooke University.  

    Patrick holds a B.Sc. degree in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Montreal University.  He has also completed postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany.

  • A chartered accountant, Mr. Cyr is vice-president and chief financial officer of the BTB Real Estate Investment Trust. Mr. Cyr holds an MBA in finance from HEC Montréal and was president of HEC Montréal’s alumni association, as well as chair of its board of directors.
Élaine C. Phénix
  • President of Phenix Capital Inc., Ms. Phénix also sits on a number of boards of directors. She has 25 years of experience in Canadian securities and capital markets, holding senior management positions at the Montréal Exchange and Lévesque, Beaubien, Geoffrion Inc. (today National Bank Financial Inc.).

Janie Béique
  • Janie C. Béïque joined the Fonds de solidarité FTQ in 2000. Prior to her appointment as Senior Vice-President, Natural Resources, Industries and Consumer Goods, Me Béïque was Senior Vice-President, New Economy, and before that, Vice-President, Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary, where she was responsible for legal and regulatory issues and government matters. She has also served on the Fonds’ Management Committee.

    Me Beïque currently sits on several Fonds committees, including the Investment Management Committee. She is a board director of Canada’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) and a member of the Autorité des marchés financiers’ advisory committee on SME financing and of the Teralys Capital investment committee. Lastly, she sits on the jury of the Grand Prix québécois de la qualité awards. In the past, Me Beïque was co-chair of Réseau Capital and a member of its executive committee and board. She also served on the boards of BioQuébec and Montréal InVivo.

    Prior to her arrival at the Fonds, Me Beïque worked for a prominent law firm. In 2005, she was named one of Canada’s top corporate lawyers under 40 by Lexpert magazine.

    Holder of a law degree from Université de Montréal, Me Beïque has been a member of the Barreau du Québec since 1991 and is registered on the roll of the Ordre.

  • Louise Proulx successful career is the product of lengthy experience in the pharmaceutical industry. She is also involved in the research milieu in Québec and Canada and sits on a number of committees and boards of directors in the public health sector.

Michel Babeu
  • With close to 30 years of tax experience, Michel Babeu puts his extensive expertise to use in serving SMEs and owner-managed businesses. Having himself founded and managed his own accounting firm in the 1990s, he is especially known for his in-depth understanding of the challenges facing entrepreneurs. He joined Richter in 2009 following the merger of RSM Richter and Chamberland Hodge. Michel is a tax partner in the firm.

Univalor commercializes innovations and discoveries exclusively from Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal research laboratories and their affiliated health centres. This vast academic network includes over 2,000 researchers, 450 research units and 16 faculties. Univalor works closely with the research offices of each of these establishments to ensure effective execution of technology transfer agreements between research laboratories and industry.

Strategic partners

With committed capital of $41.25M, AmorChem is focused on investing in promising life science projects originating from Québec-based universities and research centres. AmorChem’s innovative business model involves financing research-stage projects to enable them to reach pre-clinical proof-of-concept in a semi-virtual mode.
The goal of the partnership between the Québec Consortium for Drug Discovery (QCDD) and Univalor is to promote the emergence of spin-off companies and the financing of research projects originating from Univalor member establishments, with a view to developing innovative technologies and tools that facilitate the drug discovery process.
This partnership between the Centre québécois d’innovation en biotechnologie (CQIB) and Univalor concentrates on developing life sciences and health care technology businesses that are created by Univalor to commercialize technology from its university partners. The selected spin-off companies have the opportunity to establish a business relationship with the CQIB and to benefit from intensive support for starting a business, from access to consulting services, and from different sources of financing.

What you need to know about tech transfer

The development of research is based on the set of activities aimed at increasing the value of the results of research and develop knowledge. The valuation is not limited only to the commercial exploitation of these results, it also relies on the dissemination and exchange of knowledge in all areas of knowledge development. 

Technology Transfer, meanwhile, is a movement transmission and reception of knowledge and technological know-how and organizational partners, to increase the expertise and knowledge of at least one partner and to strengthen its competitiveness.
